🌳 Gut Health, Mental Wellbeing and Immunity Linked to Outdoor Play

When choosing childcare in Karrinyup, many families focus on learning programs — but research increasingly shows that time spent in nature is just as important for children’s health and development.

ABC News, August 27, 2016 reported that disconnection from nature can affect everything from a child’s gut health and immunity to their mental wellbeing and learning.

Researchers and health specialists at the Children and Nature Conference in Perth highlighted that:

  • Early experiences with nature influence lifelong wellbeing.

  • Nature play reduces stress and depression and improves mood.

  • Time outdoors supports children with ADHD, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

  • Exposure to natural light and outdoor microbes strengthens the immune system.

  • Vitamin D, physical activity, and varied sensory input all support brain development.

  • Nature stimulates curiosity, empathy and problem-solving skills.

Professor Susan Prescott (UWA) explained:

“When we’re in contact with nature we’re in contact with microbial elements, vitamin D from sunlight, and physical exercise — all of which impact immunity, physical health, and mental health.”

Former WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley added that nature play helps children ask big questions:

“Why is the sky blue? Why do I see the moon during the day? This brain stimulation helps build lifelong connections.”

🌞 What This Means for Families

The research is clear: children need real outdoor environments to grow healthier and happier. Artificial grass or indoor murals can’t replace sunlight, trees, and open skies. Families, carers, and schools all play a role in ensuring children spend time in nature every day.

🌳 The Karrinyup Difference

At Karrinyup Early Learning Centre, outdoor play is central to everything we do. Children spend their days in large natural gardens, where they enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and space to explore.

For nearly 10 years, families have trusted us to provide a boutique, community-based service where children can develop resilience, empathy, and strong immune systems — not just academic skills.

📌 Takeaway for Parents

When considering childcare, ask:

  • Does my child have daily access to real gardens and fresh air?

  • Will they spend their day surrounded by nature, or inside with fake substitutes?

At Karrinyup ELC, the answer is simple: children learn and thrive through real outdoor play.
