Why Location Matters: City of Melville Moves Against Childcare on Busy Roads

🚦 Why Location Matters: City of Melville Moves Against Childcare on Busy Roads

When choosing childcare in Karrinyup, many families focus on programs and facilities — but the location of a centre can be just as important for children’s health and wellbeing.

PerthNow, August 26, 2021 reported that the City of Melville is moving to ban new childcare centres on busy highways like Leach and Canning, citing health risks from traffic pollution.

The decision follows growing concern about the impact of air quality and noise on young children. Studies show that children in childcare near major roads are more likely to develop asthma and other respiratory problems.

Melville Deputy Mayor Nicholas Pazolli said:

“The potential health impacts are much more severe on children of this age than on older school children or adults.”

The council is pressing ahead with planning scheme changes that would formally deem childcare centres an “unpermitted use” on those high-traffic roads.

🌞 What This Means for Families

Not all childcare centres are the same. Location has a direct impact on children’s health and wellbeing, especially for babies and toddlers with developing lungs. While some new centres are still being built on major roads, councils are starting to recognise that this creates long-term risks for families.

🌳 The Karrinyup Difference

At Karrinyup Early Learning Centre, families can feel confident their children are cared for in a quiet, fresh-air location away from busy roads. Instead of balconies with artificial turf, our children play in large natural gardens surrounded by trees and open space.

As we approach our 10-year anniversary, we’re proud to remain a boutique, community-based service where children can breathe, play, and thrive in a safe, natural environment.

📌 Takeaway for Parents

When choosing childcare, don’t just look at the building. Ask yourself:

  • Is the centre on a major road with heavy traffic?

  • Will my child spend their days breathing diesel fumes — or fresh air in a real garden?

At Karrinyup ELC, the answer is simple: children enjoy clean air, large gardens, and a safe, community setting.
